Transferable Skills Letter

Tiffany
Fresh Hair Salon
Riverton, UT 84065

Dear Tiffany,
I am writing in regards to the part time stylist position you have posted on Craig’s List.
I am passionate about the work I do as a hairstylist.  I have an up to date License with the state of Utah.  I attended Cosmetology school from September 2003 – July 2005 where I completed my full 2000 hours of study.  I passed my practical exam with a 95%.  I went on to work at a salon for two years, where I learned and excelled at bookkeeping, retail sales and computer transaction skills.  I then decided to practice out of my home so I could be home with my young growing children, and be my own boss. I have grown a large clientele of men, women and children.   I have developed and maintained very open and honest, listening, verbal and written communication skills.    I am self-motivated and work well on my own as well as in a team environment.  I am very friendly and outgoing and get along well with all those I come into contact with.  I am confident with my skills, tasks and specialties which include, but are not limited to: highlights and hair coloring, cutting and styling men, women and children, color mixing and formulating, perms and up-do’s.  I take great pride in my abilities to preform what clients would like done to their hair.  I work hard and make great use us of my time.
I look forward to meeting with you soon.  I thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Tara G. O’Crowley

Skills Assessment

As I started this lesson I felt a little frustrated. What skills do I have?... I am glad we had these assessments to take. They really helped me to see what skills I truly have and that I am pretty good at some of them :)
Okay so three skills I enjoy...
1. Listening
2. Writing
3. Handling people/working with the public
Three skills I perform well...
1. Communicating
2. Creating
3. Supporting
Three skills I would like to develop...
1. Researching
2. Critical-thinking
3. Projecting/Forecasting
The skills I would like to develop from the employer's top 10 are...
1. As I mentioned above Analytical/Research
2. Leadership/Management skills

As for my plans to developing these skills... I tend to be a little more shy and what some would consider a "push over" I am the peacemaker and always tend to follow to avoid an argument, or debate. My husband is my total opposite. I am slowly learning to say just what I think and feel. I am finding it is far better for me and those around me to do so. I am working on building more self-confidence by pushing myself out of my "bubble". Attending school is helping me with some of these things I would like to improve on, such as the research aspect. I still want to be the same Tara, just with more confidence, and new and improved skills. With the Leadership/Management I plan to try to take to lead more on things and stop following.

Personal Values

My Top 10

1. Faith/Religion - This is my foundation and without it I would be lost. Nothing is more important to me. This will definitely affect my career choice. I will not work on Sundays when this is the day I attend church and keep this day for family time and visiting extended family.

2. Family – My husband and my children are the most important people in the world to me. I want a career that will still allow me to spend quality time with them.

3. Affection – This is very important to me. I was raised in a very affectionate home; I always knew I was loved. I try to always make a point of letting my husband and children know of my love for them with a little hug or kiss.

4. Service – I feel it is important to serve others whenever I am able to. It makes me happy to help others. I find that I can make a difference by serving others. This will be something to consider for sure when choosing a career. I like to work with others so I would not want to choose something that would isolate me from others.

5. Freedom – I am so grateful for the freedom we have. I am especially grateful for a Military husband who serves our country. I have the freedom to choose what religion I believe where I want to live and what career I want to pursue.

6. Stability – There is a comfort for me in knowing I have a stable home and living environment. I was a single mom for three years and things at time felt very unstable especially not having a father in the home. I am grateful for a hardworking husband who provides for our family. I am someone who likes structure and consistency so with a career I will need something that is stable and somewhat consistent.

7. Friendships – The older I get the more I really value good friendships. Especially with my sisters. I enjoy spending time with friends and making new friends. I know I enjoy working with others so I want a career that allows this.

8. Trust – This is very important. Trust is definitely something that has to be earned. I once read, “It takes years to build trust and only seconds to destroy it,” or “it only takes suspicion, not proof to destroy it.” It is very important in any type of relationship to be a trustworthy person.

9. Personal Learning and growing – I am finding that I love to learn, it has helped my self-esteem. I feel that by always trying to learn and grow more I am setting a good example for my children as well. This would be something that could affect a career choice, if I cannot continue to grow and learn more I could lose interest.

10. Self-Respect – I know my self-worth and I take pride in presenting myself in a very modest manner. I respect myself enough to not lower my standards or beliefs for any reason, even a career choice.
